On July 21, Turkish Cultural Center of Hartford was privileged hosting its first Ramadan Dinner with distinguished guests including Honorable Mayor of Hartford Pedro Segarra, Representative Edwin Vargas, Representative Angel Arce and Mayor of Manchester Jay Moran. Guests also included family members, staff of honorable guests and local small business owners from the Greater Hartford districts.
As the guests took their seats, Omer Kizilcik, President of the Turkish Cultural Center of Connecticut, introduced the missions and goals of TCC CT as well as its past accomplishments. Such initiatives include state house receptions, trips to Turkey and local events to promote mutual understanding.
The emcee of the evening Sena Sahin showed a presentation about TCC. As the time to break the fast drew near, a video about Ramadan and significance of fasting was played for guests which included the Call to Prayer. Over the meal, conversations of past meetings and trips, ongoing situations in Turkic and surrounding nations, and possible future events of TCC were exchanged across each table as leaders and the members of the community shared a meal together during a highly important traditional practice.
After dinner, an exchange of gifts took place between the Presidents of TCC and distinguished speakers and traditional Turkish handmade souvenirs and Turkish delights were gifted to the guests following photo op. The evening ended by remarks from distinguished guests; sharing of encouraging messages to bolster diversity and understanding of each other’s faith & beliefs within the community.
